Wool to Yarn 2014

The marvellous wool clip for 2014 is being made into yarn. Today we visited Graham and Jacqui at Wild Earth Yarns in Christchurch where Maniototo Wool is being processed into the new season’s yarns.

Sending Wool to the World

Christmas is coming and we are sending Maniototo Wool to the world. Today some hanks of undyed yarn are heading for Australia, and a parcel of “Wintery Blue” is being packaged ready to go to Portugal. Even though we haven’t mentioned it on our order page, we are happy to receive orders for undyed wool in hanks of 1kg. The cost is $NZ125 per kg. Just email us for a postage quote.

A New Home

Maniototo Wool now has a new home in Geraldine, South Canterbury – much closer to where our woolly producers are farmed, and also closer to our processors. In September, we drove down to the farm in the Magnificent Maniototo to select the newly shorn fleeces for our new season’s yarn and sliver. Wow! it is beautiful. The magnificent Maniototo 2014Sorting fleeces 2015.2

Wool for Felting

Our 24 micron wool sliver is superb for wet felting. The 2 day felting workshop I’ve just been on was a great way to trial it and learn a new technique at the same time. The wool is perfect for hats, bags and probably slippers, although I haven’t made any of these yet. Bright vibrant colours are better for felting than soft muted colours, due to the blending that happens. So I’ve been madly dyeing wool sliver for felters. AND we also have our home made olive oil soap as well – great for massaging the wool into lovely creations – and easy on the hands.

New Green Wool Colour

Wonders of Wool is on again in Wellington and Maniototo Wool will be there on 2nd August. I love to have a fresh new hand dyed wool colour to present at each market we go to, and here it is. A new green wool colour named “Citrus” – photographed with freshly picked limes from our garden
